Centre, Ala. (WIAT) — Gadsden State Community College’s Cherokee Campus, alongside the American Red Cross, will host a community blood drive from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.

All donors will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. They will also be entered into a drawing to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. To be eligible to donate, one must be at least 17 years old (16 with a parent’s permission), in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be able to present a valid photo ID.

“One donation can save more than one life,” said Randi Wright, campus director. “The need for blood donations in Alabama is critical with the state requiring 350 donations each day. Currently, we are falling short by more than 50 donations daily.”

According to the American Red Cross, the process of donating a pint of whole blood, which is the most common type of donation, typically takes about an hour. A whole blood donation can be transfused as it is, or it can be separated into red cells, plasma and platelets.

“The employees and students at Gadsden State Cherokee are proud to be part of this important life-saving effort,” Wright said. “We are excited to partner with the Red Cross as it aligns with our desire to serve and support our local community. By hosting this event, we’re providing an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and area residents to come together and make a tangible impact.”
