JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A crash involving 10 vehicles shut down all lanes of I-459 near mile marker 16 on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 3:19 p.m., and the blockage is occurring east of I-65, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Though all lanes were closed initially, all southbound lanes reopened. The ALEA does not have a timeframe on when any of the northbound lanes will be open.

According to Rocky Ridge Fire District Chief Jon Lord, an 18-wheeler was traveling in a southbound lane when it crashed and lost control. It veered into the median, where it narrowly missed a head-on collision with another 18-wheeler but did hit it. The first 18-wheeler collided with several vehicles. The second 18-wheeler was carrying a hazardous load of lye.

A driver of an 18-wheeler who was entrapped and extracted has been transported to UAB Hospital. There was another person involved in a crash sustaining minor injuries who was taken to Grandview Medical Center. There were three people who suffered minor injuries who were treated and released on the scene.

Alabama Department of Transportation personnel arrived on the scene to repair metal wiring that was damages. The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency is responsible for the hazardous material cleanup of the diesel fuel that leaked from the second 18-wheeler. Firefighters and law enforcement from different agencies were dispatched to the scene.
