Warmer this week and staying dry

Tonight: Low temperatures will drop into the middle 40s under completely clear skies.

Sunday: A warm, sunny day is in store tomorrow as we climb into the middle to upper 70s, very seasonal for the middle of October.

Next Week: Our very quiet pattern continues through at least the next seven days. Temperatures will gradually climb into the lower 80s by Monday, slightly above average. A few locations south of Birmingham will even reach the middle 80s by Wednesday as winds begin turning out of the south ahead of an approaching cold front. This front pushes through on Thursday, turning our winds back out of the north. However, cooler temperatures will not follow in its wake as we remain warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s on Friday and heading into next weekend. Overnight lows will mainly remain in the 50s Tuesday onward.

Surface high pressure will keep us rain-free, worsening our dry conditions across central Alabama. The latest drought monitor shows that moderate drought is starting to spread some, but most of us are sitting in the “abnormally dry” category. The last time we had measurable rain in Birmingham was September 28th, with only 0.01”. Based on the latest model guidance, this dry streak doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. It’s possible we make it through October without a drop of rain. The only other year this has occurred was in 2016.
