BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Authorities are on the scene of a shooting investigation involving the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon.

According to public information officer Henry Irby, deputies issued a traffic stop at around 2:15 p.m. near 1st Avenue North and 56th Street North. A pursuit began after the driver allegedly refused to stop.

The chase ended at the intersection of I-20/59 North and Messer Airport Highway when the driver crashed their vehicle. The driver then left the vehicle and shots were fired. Irby did not specify who fired first.

The driver was taken into custody and transported to UAB Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Irby said the driver struck deputies’ vehicles, but no other injuries were reported.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency identified the driver as Demarcos Javonte Mcalpine, 26, of Center Point, in a press release. ALEA also stated Mcalpine “brandished a firearm” before being shot.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an administrative investigation. ALEA is the primary department investigating the case and will turn over findings to the district attorney’s office.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact ALEA at 334-530-1198.
