ATLANTA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) — COVID-19 cases have been skyrocketing in Georgia again since mid-December, driving an increasing number of patients to local urgent cares and emergency rooms. CW69’s Valencia Jones spoke with Metro Atlanta doctors about the potential concerns, as new variants continue to emerge. Ahmaud Arbery’s Killers Get Life Sentences; No Possibility Of Parole For Travis and Gregory McMichael
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (CBS News) — The three men convicted in Ahmaud Arbery‘s murder were sentenced Friday to life in prison. Travis McMichael, 35, and his father Gregory McMichael, 66, were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan, 52, will have to serve 30 years of his life sentence before he’s eligible for parole. The three men, all of whom are White, were convicted in November for the killing of Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man. Arbery was shot and killed in February 2020 while jogging in a neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia. The shooting was captured on cellphone video, which the jury viewed during the trial. At the sentencing hearing on Friday, lead prosecutor Linda Dunikoski asked Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley to give Travis McMichael and Gregory McMichael life without the possibility of parole. Dunikoski asked for Bryan to receive life with the possibility of parole. More from CBS News
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger On Life Post-2020 Election
WASHINGTON (CBS News) — After resisting former president Donald Trump’s brash attempts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results, Georgia Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s life changed almost overnight. “You watch your back,” Raffensperger told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett. Raffensperger and his wife received death threats and threats of sexual violence from Trump supporters, even though Raffensperger is a lifelong conservative who voted for Mr. Trump in the 2020 election. Delta Announces Nonstop Flights To Indianapolis For Championship
INDIANAPOLIS (CW69 News at 10) — Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has added one-time nonstop flights from Birmingham, Huntsville, and Savannah specifically for next week’s College Football Playoff National Championship in Indianapolis. The University of Georgia and the University of Alabama will battle in the championship game in a rematch of last month’s SEC Championship. Delta’s one-time nonstop service will fly out of Birmingham, Huntsville, and Savannah to Indianapolis on Saturday, just in time for the weekend fan festivities in Indianapolis. Returning flights are scheduled for Tuesday, the day after the championship game. “Delta literally has its eye on the ball with this one-time service opportunity for fans wanting to come join the excitement and fun rivalry in Indy that is sure to energize this much-hoped-for rematch of two titan college football teams,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Baltimore County police officer Anthony Westerman was sentenced Friday to house arrest for the 2017 rape of a 22-year-old woman, authorities said. Westerman, 27, was convicted in August of two counts of second-degree rape, one count of a third-degree sexual offense, one count of fourth-degree sexual offense and one count of second-degree assault, according to a search of online court records.
