Maryland takes ownership of historic Pimlico Race Course as it prepares for makeover
BALTIMORE -- The state of Maryland has officially taken ownership of Baltimore's historic Pimlico Race Course as it plans to redevelop the venue.The Stronach Group transferred ownership on Monday to the state which will begin demolition to make Pimlico a year-round site for thoroughbred racing.All racing, training and wagering operations at the home of the Preakness Stakes will cease on Sept. 1. Site work and demolition is expected to start this fall.The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes will be held at Pimlico Race Course on May 17, 2025. The race will move to Laurel in 2026.Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed a measure in May to rebuild Baltimore's historic but antiquated race course and transfer the track to state control.Under the new law, Maryland can use $400 million in state bonds to rebuild the home of the second jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown.The process involves Maryland taking over control of the track, building a training center and eventually closing Laurel Park to shift full-time racing to Pimlico.The plan includes renovating the track surface and grandstand, adding additional stalls and a new training track, as well as redevelop the surrounding Park Heights neighborhood.

Police pursuit from Anne Arundel County to Washington D.C. ends with two dead in fiery crash
BALTIMORE -- Two people died in a fiery crash following a police pursuit involving armed robbery suspects from Anne Arundel County into Washington D.C.Officers spotted a car allegedly used in connection to multiple armed robberies in the DMV area, according to police.The vehicle passed through Prince George's County and eventually crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Washington D.C.A third person was also injured in the crash.Police found a gun they believe was tossed from the vehicle."Our hearts go out to all of the people who have fallen victim to these suspects who choose to victimize innocent people and their lives," a Washington Metropolitan Police spokesperson said. Maryland mom Rachel Morin's murder suspect indicted by grand jury
BALTIMORE -- Victor Martinez Hernandez, the man accused of killing Maryland mom Rachel Morin was indicted by a grand jury in the Harford County Circuit Court Tuesday, according to the attorney representing the Morin family.Hernandez, who authorities said entered the country illegally, is accused of raping and beating Morin, a mother of five, to death while she was out for a jog at the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air in August 2023.After a search that lasted 10 months, Martinez Hernandez was arrested at a bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before being extradited to Maryland. Martinez Hernandez is also accused of another murder in his home country of El Salvador and attacking a child in Los Angeles. UPS to shut down Baltimore County warehouse, 540 employees impacted
BALTIMORE -- United Parcel Service plans to shut down it's Baltimore County distribution warehouse and lay off 540 workers, according to a state database. Baltimore County officers won't be charged for killing man in Parkville shootout
BALTIMORE -- Baltimore County Police officers who shot and killed a man during a domestic dispute last November in Baltimore County will not be charged, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Office.Officers responded to the 2700 block of Maple Avenue for a reported domestic disturbance.When the first officer arrived at the front door of the house, a woman was heard screaming for help, according to police. Police said the woman, identified as Maxine Redfern, was shot and killed by Arnel Redfern, who then exchanged gunfire with officers.Arnel Redfern died after he was shot in the shootout. Mervo High School teacher charged with sexual assault of minor in Baltimore County
BALTIMORE - A Baltimore City high school teacher is charged with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl who lived in the same apartment complex, according to court documents. Lewis Laury, 24, is charged with second-degree rape and sexual offense in the third degree. Police said Laury is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with the minor. Laury is a teacher at Baltimore's Merganthaler Vocational-Technical High School, according to the school's website. The girl was reported missing by Baltimore County Police on June 21 and found a week later at Laury's home, according to charging documents.Baltimore County detectives worked with other law enforcement agencies and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to locate her.Laury is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
Maryland increases vehicle registration fees and tobacco taxes
BALTIMORE -- Maryland vehicle registration fees and tobacco taxes rose Monday to help pay for transportation projects and education.State lawmakers approved the vehicle registration hikes this year to help boost the state's Transportation Trust Fund.
