Underground fire causes power outages in parts of downtown Baltimore 01:02

BALTIMORE-- The majority of Baltimore residents impacted by an underground fire Sunday morning in downtown Baltimore have had their power restored, according to BGE.

The rest of the customers should have their power back by Monday morning, the utility company anticipates.

"Customers may experience additional temporary service interruptions during the restoration process," a BGE spokesperson said. "BGE appreciates our customers' patience during this work and the coordinated efforts with Baltimore City to ensure it is performed safely and as quickly as possible."

The underground fire on North Charles Street prompted road closures and sent one firefighter to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to fire officials, crews found multiple fires coming from manhole covers. The fire was contained by 8:30 a.m.

BGE said it had to de-energized the electric system for safety because of the underground fire. Three businesses and about 2,100 BGE customers were impacted by the power outage.

Crews shutdown North Charles Street from Lexington Street to Mulberry Street and Saratoga Street from St Paul Street to Sharp Street.
