Handicap placard stolen from woman’s car in Brighton 02:26

BRIGHTON - A Brighton woman is struggling to get around after a thief broke into her car to steal her handicap placard. The damage has also left her with hundreds of dollars in insurance payments.

Kelsey Christopher suffers from two different heart conditions, has undergone reconstructive hip surgery, and recently dislocated her knee.

"I fell, and I have a connective tissue disorder, so I am more prone to dislocations," said Christopher. "I made a post on Facebook because I saw somebody else who's roommate had their placard stolen."

The thief broke into her car by smashing the front passenger side window with a makeshift object. It was parked at her apartment complex. Christopher has asked that we keep the location hidden.

"It looks like a fishing bob wrapped in neon paracord," explains Christopher. "The detective said prints don't stay on that specific material. I didn't notice my placard was missing until I was waiting for police to come."

    Similar crimes reported recently

She says detectives told her this has happened a dozen times recently. We reached out to Boston Police, but they could not confirm a trend. She also says the crime was caught on surveillance camera, but police are not releasing any footage at this time because it's an ongoing investigation.

"It's the first time my window has been broken into and something stolen, but it's the third time my car has been broken into in this complex," said Christopher.

She now fears that someone may use the placard or try to sell it. It does have her picture on it along with personal information. Christopher now has to replace the placard so she can go about her day safely. It will also cost her $500 in insurance deductible payments to fix the damages.

"I nanny here and there, but I am disabled and unemployed, so I don't have $500, and I can't get around anywhere," says Christopher.
