Man dead after shooting, attempted carjackings on I-190 in Worcester

WORCESTER - A man who fired a shot at police and tried to carjack drivers on I-190 in Worcester Wednesday afternoon is dead after shooting himself, police said.

Both directions of I-190 were shut down for nearly four hours after police chased the man, who was a suspect in an earlier fatal shooting in a neighborhood nearby.

Police responded to a home on Heroult Street at about 2:20 p.m. and found a man with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A short time later, a Massachusetts State Police trooper approached a man acting suspiciously. Police said the man pulled out a gun, fired a round and then fled.

Gunman attempted to carjack drivers on highway

Police were then sent to I-190 northbound for a report of an armed man stopping traffic, pointing a gun at drivers, and trying to carjack them.

"In response to the imminent threat posed by the male, a Worcester Police officer and a Massachusetts State Trooper discharged their firearms during the incident," Worcester police said. "The man being pursued turned his firearm on himself and shot himself."

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

Police said the man from the incident on the highway is believed to be the suspect from the shooting on Heroult Street and there is no danger to the public.

The highway was closed near Exit 2 and reopened at about 7:40 p.m. Shocked neighbors came to an overpass to see investigators combing the closed highway for clues, wondering what led up to the chaos.

"This is very scary, it is surreal," said Cedric Saysay. "I've been in Worcester for about 40 years, and I went to school here and I live here and I work here, this is the first time I've seen this on this highway."

Police asked anyone with video or information about the incident to call the Worcester Police.
