Vegan "meat" is actually the healthier alternative, research finds
BOSTON -- Canadian researchers have found that plant-based meat alternatives are healthier than regular meat. In the past, there has been some skepticism about whether plant-based meat alternatives should be considered healthy given that they are highly processed, often low in fiber, and high in salt, sugar, and additives. However, Canadian researchers analyzed decades of previous studies and found that plant-based alternatives are indeed healthier when compared to traditional meat. According to the research, risk factors for heart disease such as cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and body weight improved when meats were replaced with plant-based substitutes. It's important to keep in mind that there are wide variations in the nutritional value of meat substitutes when it comes to sodium and saturated fat -- so read labels carefully.
Drinking coffee can actually have health benefits
BOSTON -- A new study suggests that drinking coffee can help reduce the risk of death in people who are inactive and may offset the negative impacts it has on your body. We know that leading a sedentary lifestyle raises your risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease, and even cancer. However, a new study suggests that drinking coffee may have some benefits.Chinese researchers looked at data on more than 10,000 American adults and found that sitting for more than 8 hours a day was associated with an increased risk of death and heart disease compared to sitting for less than four hours a day. However, those who were sedentary who drank the most coffee appeared to have a reduced mortality risk compared to those who did not drink coffee. It's important to note that this one association study doesn't mean that drinking a lot of coffee permits you to sit around all day -- there may be other factors at play, but it does offer more evidence that drinking coffee may provide some health benefits.
New study links loneliness to greater stroke risk in older people
BOSTON -- Loneliness is a major public health issue and recent studies have shown the devastating effects on one's health and well-being, including putting older adults at higher risk of stroke.According to a recent poll by the American Psychiatric Association, one in three American adults reports feeling lonely every week, with 10% of that group saying they feel it every day. Previous studies have linked loneliness with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, but research out of Harvard focused specifically on stroke risk.Researchers looked at data on more than 12,000 adults who were 50 years and older, and found a 56% greater risk of stroke for people who experienced chronic loneliness compared to those who said they weren't lonely. Now, researchers are looking more closely at why chronic loneliness raises stroke risk.

The opinions expressed below are Jon Keller's, not those of WBZ, CBS News or Paramount Global.BOSTON - When President Biden and former President Donald Trump face off in Atlanta Thursday night, it will be a high-risk moment for both men."How should I handle him?" RFK Jr. to stream his own "real debate" during Trump-Biden debate
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is planning to respond to the Trump-Biden debate Thursday night in real time, in what his campaign is calling "The Real Debate."CNN has excluded RFK Jr. from the debate, determining he doesn't meet criteria including a polling threshold and appearance on a sufficient number of states' ballots to win the presidency. Kennedy and his team argue that former President Donald Trump and President Biden aren't yet on any ballots, since the Republican National Convention and Democratic National Convention haven't yet taken place. Kennedy's campaign filed a complaint last month with the Federal Election Commission accusing CNN, Mr. Biden, Trump...
