Motorcyclist killed in fiery crash on Edens Expressway
CHICAGO (CBS) — A motorcyclist was killed in a fiery crash on the inbound Eden Expressway Saturday night, Illinois State Police said.It happened around 8:15 p.m. on I-94 near Lake Avenue.State police said the rider of a Suzuki motorcycle crossed onto a ramp as a person in a white Toyota Prius was driving down the ramp. The motorcycle hit the back of the car and caught fire.The motorcycle rider was taken to the hospital, where they died. It's unclear if the driver of the car was injured. Around 10:11 p.m., all southbound lanes were shut down for investigation, and traffic was diverted off Skokie Avenue. All lanes were reopened at 12:25 a.m. Sunday.No further information was immediately available.
Boy, 7, hospitalized after being shot in head on Dan Ryan Expressway
CHICAGO (CBS) — A 7-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was shot on the Dan Ryan Expressway Sunday morning.Illinois State Police say a vehicle was traveling down I-94 near 73rd Street around 2:40 a.m. when someone in another car started shooting at them – striking the boy who was a passenger.The driver of the struck car exited the expressway and stopped near 22nd and Michigan to call for help. The boy was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.State police closed the expressway's northbound lanes just before 4 a.m. to investigate. All lanes reopened around 4:53 a.m.Investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. No further information was immediately available.
Stray showers, heavy at times in Chicago with 80s for highs
CHICAGO (CBS) — A few spotty showers will be possible for Sunday. The rain could be heavy at times, especially near the I-88 Corridor. Highs will reach the lower 80s for most of us, but the upper 70s are expected near the immediate lake shore due to a lake breeze, with winds sustained at 5 to 10 mph from the northeast. Normal for this time of year is 85 degrees for a high and 67 degrees for a low, so it will be a touch cooler today region-wide, with humidity levels slowly increasing. Drier conditions return overnight with lows in the middle 60s.The workweek forecast is almost copy-and-paste for Monday. Police release new surveillance photo of missing elderly Skokie woman
CHICAGO (CBS) — Skokie Police have released a new surveillance photo of a missing elderly woman from Skokie, Illinois. Tsering Wangyal has been missing since Monday. The 82-year-old was last seen at her condo building on Bronx Place. On Saturday night, police released the new surveillance image from that very same day. It was taken just after 6 p.m. Monday at the Levy Senior Center in Evanston. The family said she was heading to a prayer meeting. They also say she has no driver's license and left without her money or phone. Police say teams brought out bloodhounds, but last week's heavy rain may have washed away her scent.
Police search for three in armed robbery spree
CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Police are looking for a group of armed robbers targeting people living on the city's South and West sides. Police have released surveillance video of the suspects and say the men robbed at least seven people at gunpoint early on June 26. The entire robbery spree happened in just about one hour. Police say in each incident, three males wearing all black and ski masks pulled up in a stolen silver 2018 Hyundai Sonata. Activists call on Chicago Police Department to reopen investigation into officers with extremist ties
CHICAGO (CBS) — Activists Saturday demanded the Chicago Police Department reopen its investigation into officers with ties to known extremist groups. "We are the people, and we are the ones who employ the police," said Grace Patino with the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. We pay for their salaries. We pay for their overtime. And we pay for the misconduct cases. We have a right and a responsibility to stand up and say that Oath Keeper cops aren't welcome here." An internal affairs investigation found eight officers with connections to right-wing extremist groups like the Oath Keepers.However, according to Inspector General Deborah Witzburg, investigators only interviewed those officers themselves. They did not take additional steps or document whether their association with the group discredited their department.
