Quick and strong storms sock Chicago area

CHICAGO (CBS) — A round of quick and severe storms pounded through the Chicago area Friday evening.

The quick burst of storms brought strong winds and left a trail of damage in some areas. In west suburban Forest Park, trees were knocked down into a garage and power lines.

Nearly hurricane-force wind gusts were seen in Kane County west of Chicago. Severe storms were seen within the city too.

The storms came on account of a comma-shaped low-pressure system centered over Wisconsin, but with a tail that extends all the way to the mid-Atlantic. They prompted a string of severe thunderstorm warnings for the area.

A severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect until 8:15 p.m. for northern Will, southeastern DuPage, and southern Cook counties.

By 10 p.m., the storms were exiting the area, heading southeast into north central Indiana.

These storms followed earlier storms that brought sun showers in the late afternoon, and 1 to 2 inches of rain on Thursday night.

Once the parent low-pressure center is sitting east of the Chicago area across the eastern Great Lakes this weekend, instability showers may be present both Saturday and Sunday.

Scattered rain is expected to resume around 10 a.m. Saturday.

A couple of passing showers are likely around the time of the Bears' preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Soldier Field at noon Saturday, and Cubs' game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field at 1:20 p.m. But a rainout is not expected for either.
