Mesquite PD arrests suspect involved in shootout with officers

The Mesquite Police Department has arrested a suspect they say shot at officers early Monday morning near Poteet High School.

The shooting was not related to the school, but classes at the high school, as well as nearby Austin Elementary, were delayed until 10 a.m. due to the investigation, police said.

According to Mesquite PD, officers responded to a nearby Whataburger just before 4 a.m. over reports of a man with a knife threatening employees. The suspect left the restaurant before officers arrived, but later called the police department and said he was near Poteet High School.

Officers found someone in the area with a long gun and exchanged fire with the suspect, police said. No one was hit.

Police surrounded a home in the neighborhood just north of the high school where they said the suspect was hiding.

There will be an additional police presence in the area Monday but there is no ongoing threat, police said.
