Mirage casino in Las Vegas giving away $1.6 million before it closes
The Mirage in Las Vegas is giving away over $1.6 million in cash before the iconic casino closes its doors next week. The casino is set to close on Wednesday, July 17, but has to giveaway the unclaimed progressive jackpots.For slot machines, the casino said it will give away $200,000 in guaranteed winnings each day through July 11th.$250,000 will be given away on July 12th and 13th and $100,000 on the 16th. An additional $400,000 will be given away in table game jackpots.In Nevada, the law says players are obligated to receive progressive jackpots before a casino closes. The Mirage opened on the Vegas Strip in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn and it was the first resort to have a sidewalk attraction with its volcano, prompting the Bellagio and Venetian to put in dancing fountains and canals.In addition to the volcano, the Mirage was also home to the Siegfried and Roy's white tigers show and a Cirque du Soleil show set to Beatles music called "LOVE."The resort will reopen in 2027 as new Hard Rock Hotel and casino with a soaring 700-foot-tall tower in the shape of a guitar.

Shelley Duvall, star of "The Shining" and "Popeye," dies at 75
Shelley Duvall, who starred in "The Shining" and worked consistently with director Robert Altman, has died at 75 years old, her partner Dan Gilroy confirmed to CBS News.No cause of death was given but Gilroy told CBS News that Duvall was suffering a lot in the last year of her life, and said that she is now "free to fly away." Suspects crash car into South Los Angeles store, steal $25K of merchandise
Authorities are looking for a group of suspects who crashed a car into a store in the Gramercy Park area and burglarized the business on Thursday. The crime occurred about 3:15 a.m. in the 2100 block of Century Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The store owner said around $25,000 worth of shoes were taken along with $500 worth of clothing. Investigators believe the car used in the crash was stolen after the group ditched the car and ran off with the merchandise.No arrests have been made yet.
In a boost for consumers, U.S. inflation is cooling fast
Consumer prices are continuing to moderate, with June data showing U.S. inflation is once again cooling after unexpectedly high readings earlier this year. The new report could help bolster the case for an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve in September.Consumer prices declined 0.1% in June from May, with inflation curtailed by lower gas prices and a smaller increase in costs at the grocery store. Orange County deputies on Wednesday identified the man accused of decapitating his mother, father, and the family's chihuahua in San Juan Capistrano Tuesday morning. Excessive heat warning in effect for Inland Empire
An excessive heat warning is in effect for the San Bernardino and Riverside County Valleys until 9 p.m. Thursday as scorching temperatures remain in the Inland Empire, the National Weather Service said. The warning includes the cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Corona, Fontana, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Moreno Valley. Residents in these areas are urged to prepare for dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures ranging from 98 to107 degrees Fahrenheit. "With really bad heat stroke you can have core temperatures reaching 106 degrees," said Dr. Brian Savino, an emergency room physician at Loma Linda University Health. "You have to rapidly get those patients cooled off to preserve their brain." The National Weather Service is warning residents in the area of the potential for significant heat-related illnesses during extreme heat, when hiking and outdoor exercise activities can be deadly.
