South LA apartment complex locked down after suspect points gun at neighbor
Residents inside an apartment in the Vermont Square neighborhood of South Los Angeles had to barricade inside their units after one of their neighbors pointed a gun at a woman on Friday night. It started at about 7 p.m. in 1950 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when the suspect knocked on his neighbor's door. When she looked through her peephole, she saw the male suspect pointing a revolver at her. She did not open the door and called 911. The suspect and his girlfriend barricaded the out of her door, forcing her and her seven other neighbors to shelter in place. Neighbors said the suspect and his girlfriend kept walking up and down the hallways banging on everyone's doors. Patrol officers from the Los Angeles Police Department took over the bottom floor. However, the suspect and his girlfriend were on the top floor. An LAPD SWAT team headed over to the complex after hearing about the situation.

A pair of large fires burning in the San Gabriel Valley have prompted officials to issue an advisory for residents due to air quality concerns. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory starting Friday evening and lasting through Saturday afternoon due mostly to the Fork Fire, which has currently engulfed nearly 300 acres of brush in the San Gabriel Mountains above Glendora. Officials say that the smoke from the fire will cause elevated levels of fine particulate matter in parts of the mountains, including Mt. Baldy and Crestline. Three gang members in Los Angeles will spend the next several decades in federal prison for killing an off-duty police officer who was house-hunting with his girlfriend in 2022. Crews battling brush fire burning near 210 Freeway in Tujunga
Firefighters are working to gain the upper hand on a nearly 40-acre brush fire burning off the side of the 210 Freeway near La Tuna Canyon Road in Tujunga.The blaze was reported a little before 4:15 p.m. near eastbound lanes of the freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. At the latest, crews say that the fire, which is 20% contained, has consumed 43 acres of brush on the embankment of the busy thoroughfare.Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel are assisting in the firefight. With SkyCal overhead, traffic on the freeway could be seen slowing to a crawl as firefighters blocked lanes with their equipment. They were able to stop the flames from jumping the freeway, instead directing them to burn downhill away from the dozens of cars looking on. California Highway Patrol officers issued a SigAlert for the rightmost lanes to allow crews access to the area. Crews are expected to remain on scene overnight as they continue to try to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire remains unclear. This is a developing story. Check back for details.
2 children hurt as Fork Fire burns in the Angeles National Forest
At least two children suffered injuries after a fire rapidly grew in the Angeles National Forest. The children suffered smoke inhalation injuries. It started in the San Gabriel Mountains above Glendora at about 3:10 p.m. near the East Fork Road area. The Angeles National Forest dubbed the blaze the Fork Fire. As of 6 p.m., the wildfire was around 250 acres. So far, crews have 0% containment. The Angeles National Forest issued evacuation orders with a staging area in the parking lot with trail access to the Bridge to Nowhere. East Fork Road is closed from Highway 39 to Glendora Mountain Road. Highway 39 will also be closed through the weekend.The Fork Fire caused the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue an air quality advisory.This is a developing story. Trash fire downtown Los Angeles spreads to 5 commercial buildings
A Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter was injured battling a massive fire downtown Los Angeles that spread to multiple nearby buildings before crews got it under control Friday morning.A total of five buildings were damaged by the blaze and two were completely destroyed, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.The fire began at an outside storage area at 683 S. Kohler St. near Seventh Street and burned for over 5 hours, spreading to multiple other buildings on that block.Fire crews responded around 2:07 a.m. and began battling the flames with both defensive and offensive tactics, said LAFD. The fire spread to a group of buildings at 747 S. Kohler St.It took over 170 firefighters to put out the blaze in around 5 hours.One firefighter was taken to the hospital for a knee injury and was in stable condition. No other injuries reported.Crews will remain on scene to put out any hot spots and continue to cool material beneath the debris. Smoke will be seen in the area throughout the day, fire officials said.The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Shippers FedEx and UPS on Friday said the Microsoft outage caused by a software glitch could lead to delayed package deliveries. Dangerously hot conditions arrive for inland areas of SoCal

Gov. Newsom's office says state is monitoring California impacts of the global computer outage
SACRAMENTO – Computer systems across the world and across the Sacramento area are recovering after a massive outage that started Thursday night. The problem stems from an issue with systems linked to Microsoft and the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Companies across the world, from media outlets and airline companies, started getting the "Blue Screen of Death" on their computers. Law enforcement agencies are saying that critical infrastructure, like 911 services, has not been affected by the outage. In a statement, California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office says the state is coordinating with local emergency officials to address any lingering impacts of the outage. "At this time, there are no reports of impacts to life-safety public services in California," the governor's office wrote. While CrowdStrike has said they've rolled out a fix, not every system has recovered. Sacramento International Airport, in particular, has continued to feel the domino effects of the outage into Friday morning. Travelers are dealing with canceled flights and are scrambling to rebook.
