Driver cited after striking girl with car 00:30

MIAMI - A 7-year-old girl is fighting for her life Tuesday, after being struck by a car outside a pharmacy in Miami.

Miami police said a 92-year-old driver hit the girl while her mother was sideswiped when they were in front of the Navarro discount pharmacy on the 2100 block of SW 32nd Avenue.

The girl was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Miami police spokesman Mike Vega said, "Unfortunately, the girl is very critical. She suffered head injuries. She also had pelvic injuries."

"It's sad to see a 7-year-old girl who was just starting her life and now she is clinging to life in a hospital."

"We are asking for prayers for her and her family as they are dealing with her serious injuries."

Vega said surveillance video from the pharmacy shows what happened just before 4 p.m.

The driver told investigators that her brakes were not working.

"Based on the video, the brakes never came on. She was accelerating instead of hitting the brake," said Vega.

It's unknown whether the driver's age was a factor but Vega expressed his concern.

"As we get older, our senses get different, and maybe we need to say, 'Maybe I shouldn't be driving' and maybe look at another alternative to driving."

The driver is not being identified right now, but police said she has been cited for careless driving and other charges are possible.
