Mother grieving loss of son killed in Miami Gardens crash
MIAMI - A grieving mother says her 21-year-old son was killed early Tuesday morning in a Miami Gardens crash. The crash happened at Miami Gardens Drive and NW 22nd Avenue. The woman said she received a text message from her son's, phone which said it appeared to have been involved in an accident. It also provided a location, via GPS, which she rushed to. She told CBS News Miami that after asking for information, police informed her that her son, Mekhi Hoosein Quiles, had died in a crash. She said another driver ran a red light and hit him. That driver was taken to the hospital. The woman said her son was an artist and the best person she knew. She added that he was just admitted to St. Thomas University. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that one person was taken to the hospital. Police have not confirmed the fatality.
Man accused of shooting apartment worker, setting building on fire to be arraigned
MIAMI - The man accused of shooting an employee at a Miami apartment building and then setting that building is set to be arraigned on Tuesday. Juan Figueroa, 73, is facing attempted murder and arson charges. He's accused of shooting maintenance worker Feder Biotte on the third floor of the Temple Court Apartments last month and then lighting a fire in the building. MIAMI - Health officials have issued an alert in the Florida Keys after two people were confirmed to have dengue fever.The local alert comes days after the CDC issued a health advisory warning of an increased risk of dengue infections in the country. MIAMI - Ready for home hardening improvements? The state is ready to help. On Monday, Florida officials announced the reopening of the My Safe Florida Home program's grant application portal. The popular grant program aims to help residents cut property insurance costs by funding up to $10,000 for storm-related upgrades. What is it? The grand opening of Tucker Tower in March attracted attention and celebration from community leaders. LAUDERHILL - Two Lauderhill brothers who were reported missing on Saturday night have been found safe, police confirmed this Monday.Eleven-year-old Jarohn Thompson and his brother, 13-year-old Heyvion Johnson, had last been seen walking northbound on NW 55th Ave. on Saturday night, according to Lauderhill police. Man dead after being reportedly killed by possible lightning strike, Davie Police say
FORT LAUDERDALE — A man is dead after he was reportedly struck by lightning in a Broward County park on Sunday morning, police said.Shortly before 10:30 a.m., Davie Police officers responded to a medical call out of Vista View Park after hearing that "a person was down and may have been struck by lightning."When they arrived, they found a dead man in the park, police told CBS News Miami.
