Sheriff: Man ran stop sign, had not been wearing seat belt in deadly Wisconsin crash
DUNN COUNTY, Wis. — Authorities are investigating after a 77-year-old man driving an SUV died in a crash with a semi in western Wisconsin on Wednesday.The Dunn County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened around 10:46 a.m. at 710th Street and 240th Avenue in Spring Brook.Upon arrival, responders found the lone occupant of the SUV, who they say no longer had a pulse. Life-saving measures were attempted but he died on the scene.Investigators say a driver in a loaded log truck had been traveling eastbound on 240th Avenue when the SUV, traveling southbound on 710th Street, did not stop at a stop sign and continued into the intersection, colliding with the truck.The driver of the SUV had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's office. His identity will be released pending family notification.The driver of the semi did not suffer any injuries.

1 million gallons of wastewater spilled from a northern Minnesota energy plant
COHASSET, Minn. — Multiple state and federal agencies are working together following a massive spill of coal ash wastewater from a northern Minnesota energy plant.According to Minnesota Power, it's estimated that 1 million gallons of wastewater was spilled from the Bowell Energy Center in Cohasset, with an unknown amount reaching Blackwater Lake. The lake is connected to the Mississippi River. "The leak occurred from a pipeline that transfers the wastewater from an inactive coal combustion residual pond to the plant for process water," a statement from Minnesota Power said. Minnesota Power said the leak was detected around 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday. They contacted the MPCA and EPA 15 minutes later. Minnesota Power is now monitoring potential impacts to surface water and wildlife. "The pond, which is inactive, is monitored 24/7 and as soon as the discharge was detected, action was taken to stop the flow of ash wastewater and contain the leak from surface waters," the statement said. Minnesota Power said it immediately notified the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency. The power company is also working closely with other agencies to identify and assess the impacts and determine the cause of the leak.
Xcel Energy truck driver crashes into Hennepin Avenue business
MINNEAPOLIS — Police say an Xcel Energy truck crashed into a Minneapolis business, causing a partial collapse late Wednesday morning.The crash happened shortly before noon at 700 Hennepin Avenue East when the truck driver overcorrected while driving through road construction, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.Xcel Energy says the driver hit the passenger side of the vehicle on a newly installed concrete base structure, which sent the truck into the building — home to Supply Studio.One person was inside the building at the time of the crash and no injuries were reported, police say.The truck will remain pending an assessment from the city's engineering staff about the structural integrity of the building, according to a statement from Xcel. Hennepin Avenue in front of the building will be closed until the truck is removed.Minneapolis police say the driver of the truck is cooperating with the investigation.

State patrol searching for hit-and-run driver who struck man in Burnsville
BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota State Patrol says it's investigating a hit-and-run crash early Wednesday morning in Burnsville that seriously injured a 24-year-old man.It happened at about 2:30 a.m. near Highway 13 and Washburn Avenue.The state patrol says the victim, a Shakopee resident, is expected to survive. Minnesota tribe holding celebration for the return of nearly 12,000 acres of land
LEECH LAKE, Minn. — A Native American tribe in northern Minnesota will be celebrating with state leaders Wednesday the return of nearly 12,000 acres of land.In June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that 11,778 acres of Chippewa National Forest land would be transferred back to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. The move was part of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act signed into law in 2020, which reverses a land seizure by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in the 1940s. The tribe is holding a commemorative ceremony at 1 p.m. U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and Rep. Betty McCollum will be in attendance. Smith, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, was a sponsor of the restoration act. When the return of land was announced, Leech Lake Band Chairman Faron Jackson Sr. hailed the historic restoration. "This is one of the most monumental and positive developments to take place on Leech Lake since the first treaties were signed and the reservation was established in 1855," Jackson said.
