Record flooding and powerful tornadoes ravaged parts of Iowa for weeks this spring, destroying or damaging thousands of homes, closing roads and bridges and costing over $130 million in infrastructure damage, officials said Thursday.The disasters touched two-thirds of Iowa's 99 counties, starting with devastating tornadoes in late April and May. Father, bystanders lift car to free boy on bike struck by driver in Maplewood
WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — When a driver struck a boy on a bicycle in Maplewood last week, authorities say the boy's father and a group of bystanders performed a heroic feat to get him out from under the vehicle.The boy and his father were crossing the intersection of White Bear Avenue North and Highway 36 around 11 p.m. on July 4 when a driver exiting 36 hit the boy, according to the Maplewood Police Department.The boy and his bike got stuck under the SUV, and several people, including his dad, lifted the car to free him, according to police and surveillance video.The boy was taken to a hospital and his injuries are unknown, police said.
Trooper who hit Owatonna teen's car was previously reprimanded for reckless driving, state patrol docs say
ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Minnesota State Patrol trooper who was charged with manslaughter in a high-speed crash that killed an Owatonna High School cheerleader in May had a record of reckless driving while on duty, according to his personnel file.The file, which the state patrol released on Thursday, contains four separate reprimands for incidents in which Shane Roper hit another state patrol unit, a civilian's vehicle, a deer and a median.
