3-year-old child, woman injured in Brooklyn hit-and-run, police say

NEW YORK — A child and a woman were injured in a hit-and-run in Brooklyn on Saturday, police say.

It happened around 4 p.m. at Winthrop Street and Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville.

Police say a 61-year-old man was driving a minivan drunk down Rockaway Parkway when he hit two vehicles. The driver then allegedly made a U-turn, struck a 26-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl, and drove off.

According to police, the child suffered only minor injuries, but the 26-year-old was unconscious and unresponsive when first responders arrived on the scene. Both were taken to a local hospital and were last reported to be in stable condition.

The driver was charge with DWI, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Police say about a minute after hitting the woman and child, the driver crashed into two unoccupied parked vehicles a few blocks away at Howard and Blake avenues.

Surveillance video shows the minivan speeding down the street, slamming into the side of a parked Jeep and pushing it onto the sidewalk, overturning onto the driver's side and striking a parked pickup truck before coming to a rest. The minivan appeared to already have a damaged hood before it crashed into the parked vehicles.

A crowd of good Samaritans, including Eudes James, gathered in the street and helped roll the vehicle upright.

"[The driver] was bleeding out of his mouth. There was blood on the road. It was kinda scary watching somebody being pinned and being crushed," James said.

"When the firefighter opened the door on the scene, that's when the liquor bottle fell out," witness Shanique Fox said.

The two parked vehicles damaged in the crash belong to James.

"I'm actually living in New Hampshire right now. I came down to see my mom, spend some time with her for the weekend, but unfortunately, I am here now until I can figure out how I can get back home," he said.

The investigation is ongoing.
