NEW YORK -- A fight over a parking space led to a shooting that injured two people, according to police in New York City.

Two men fighting over a space the Bronx each pulled out a gun during the dispute just as alternate side parking took effect Thursday, police sources said.

According to police, the violent argument between one man sitting in his car and another started just before 9 a.m. on Bryant Avenue by Jennings Street in the Crotona Park East section.

One man pulled out a gun and so did the other, detectives said, and then one fired.

"Everyone around in the neighborhood, they were just scared, they were frightened. They couldn't believe that it was happening in broad daylight," one person said.

A 66-year-old man was shot three times in the torso and taken to the hospital with serious injuries, detectives said. A 48-year-old woman walking on the sidewalk nearby was shot in the ankle and hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

"Take a violent turn to just shoot someone for a small, tiny parking spot. It's just ridiculous," another person said.

Neighbors said they heard at least six gunshots go off. One of the bullets went right through Reynoldo Douglas' car window.

"If the bullet had hit here, I would have been hit," Douglas told CBS News New York. "All I heard was bullets and then I seen people running."

A suspect was not in custody, police said.
