Off-duty Philadelphia police officer shoots, kills man in Northeast Philadelphia 01:37

An off-duty Philadelphia police homicide detective shot and killed a man on a Northeast Philadelphia street Thursday night, the department said Friday.

The shooting happened on Willits Road near the intersection of Holme Avenue at about 11:30 p.m.

Police said the detective had stopped his personal vehicle on the road, as did another driver, described only as a 54-year-old man. The other driver got out of his car and walked up to the detective's vehicle. While seated in the driver's seat, the detective fired multiple rounds from his personal firearm, with at least one of the shots hitting the man.

Police said paramedics from the Philadelphia Fire Department took the man to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither the man nor the detective have been identified. Police said the detective is 43 years old and joined the force 14 years ago. He is on administrative duty while the investigation continues.

PPD's officer-involved shootings investigations unit, the internal affairs unit, and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the department.

Investigators on the scene were focused on two cars, one of which has a bullet hole in the driver-side window.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
