7 arrested in deaths of 53 migrants smuggled into Texas in trailer in 2022
Guatemala City — Guatemalan police on Wednesday arrested seven Guatemalans accused in the smuggling of 53 migrants from Mexico and Central America who died of asphyxiation in 2022 in Texas after being abandoned in a tractor trailer in scorching summer heat.They were the latest arrests after years of investigation into the deadliest tragedy of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico. Driver dies after multiple vehicles crash in south Sacramento
SACRAMENTO – A driver died and another person is in the hospital after a multiple-vehicle crash in south Sacramento on Wednesday morning, police said. The three-vehicle crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. in the area of Bruceville Road just north of Sheldon Road, right in front of Jiffy Lube. A driver found with "significant injuries" died at the scene despite life-saving measures, police said. He has not been identified. A person in a different vehicle was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. The Sacramento Police Major Collision Investigation Unit has responded to take over the investigation. The road was closed for several hours.It's unknown what led up to the crash at this time.

Forward spread of Amaral Fire in hills near Fairfield stopped; evacuation orders downgraded
A wildfire in the hills near the Solano County community of Green Valley prompted evacuation warnings and orders on Wednesday. The fire, named the Amaral Fire by Cal Fire, was burning near Amaral Court and Rockville Road. Cal Fire said the fire burned about 12 acres before they were able to stop the forward spread. A spacecraft on its way to explore Jupiter flew past Earth on Wednesday, using the planet's gravity to help it travel through the solar system. Suspect arrested in alleged kidnapping, assault at UC Davis Arboretum
DAVIS – An arrest has been made after a woman reported to police that she was grabbed from behind at the UC Davis Arboretum. UC Davis police say the incident happened on Aug. 12 around 6 p.m. The woman reported that she was walking at the Arboretum, a popular nature walk on the UC Davis campus, when someone seized her from behind. She was able to get away, police say, then call for help. Officers got to the scene quickly after the report was made, but no suspect was ever located that day. On Wednesday, UC Davis officials announced that the suspect – Davis resident James Garvin – had turned himself in at the college's police department. Garvin has since been booked into Yolo County Jail and is facing charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, and assault with great bodily injury. Police note that Garvin is neither a student nor an employee of UC Davis.
