A child custody exchange went horribly wrong Saturday in Richmond, where a man allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at a woman's vehicle as she attempted to flee with three children in her vehicle.

Police said at 6:50 p.m., officers responded to the 3500 block of Nevin Avenue for a report of a shooting. Officers discovered an argument erupted during a child custody exchange. The suspect pulled out a handgun and fired at the victim as she attempted to flee in her vehicle.

Shots hit the vehicle, occupied by the victim and three children -- two under the age of 2 -- but didn't hit anyone.

Aided by outside agencies and a drone, police found the suspect, who had fled on foot, in the 3600 block of Barrett Avenue. With the help of a K-9, police arrested the male suspect afterward as he tried hiding under a house's crawl space.

The suspect discarded the gun, which was reported stolen and was recovered by officers.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of attempted murder, child abuse, violations of a restraining order, domestic violence, and possession of a stolen and loaded firearm, along with several other misdemeanors.
