A 47-year-old man accused of animal cruelty was arraigned Thursday in Stockton, prosecutors said.Maurice Cosby Smith, of Stockton, was arrested Tuesday at his home on suspicion of shooting his dog with a BB gun while the animal was in a cage. Mendocino County Sheriff's Office warns of local phone scam
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam circulating in the county in which the caller claims to be an employee of the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's officials reported Thursday that they received multiple reports from residents who received phone calls from a person claiming to work for the Sheriff's Office. The caller claims that the call recipient missed jury duty and that they must pay a fine."Do not release personal identifying information to anyone on the telephone," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement, "and do not agree to pay any fines electronically, by using gift cards, payment apps, or Bitcoin. No Deputy, Sergeant, Lieutenant, or Captain will ever call you from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office asking for money or payments."The office also reminds the public that it does not receive payments via mobile payment apps, cryptocurrency or gift cards.The Sheriff's Office asks anyone who receives a suspicious phone call or letter to contact them at (707) 463-4086.

SF retail thief ordered to pay Lululemon $10,000 restitution
A man was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution for a series of snatch-and-grab thefts from Lululemon apparel shops in San Francisco, prosecutors said Friday.Bernard Appel, 32, was convicted after pleading guilty to organized retail theft with the intent to resell merchandise and commercial burglary, the San Francisco District Attorney's offices said in a press release.Appel committed a string of thefts from Lululemon stores in San Francisco Centre Mall and on Fillmore Street from July 10, 2023, through November 19, 2023, prosecutors said.He would use a large bag or a large Lululemon coat, turned upside down and inside out, to carry off leggings and other merchandise as he quickly exited the stores, prosecutors said.Appel has been in custody since his arrest on Jan. 7, according to prosecutors.

CHP arrests Oakland man in freeway shooting
An Oakland man has been accused of a freeway shooting after a road rage incident northeast of Orinda, the California Highway Patrol said Friday.Aaron Demetrius Davis Jr., 30, was accused of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and illegal firearm possession, the CHP said in a Facebook post.The freeway shooting was reported about 6 p.m. on June 16 on eastbound state Highway 24 at the Acalanes Road off-ramp, police said. The victim, who wasn't injured, told police that a road rage incident led to a non-injury crash on Highway 24.
