2024 Wyndham Championship odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions by golf model that's nailed 13 majors
By CBS Sports Staff,
2024-08-07
The 2024 Wyndham Championship is the final event of the 2024 PGA Tour regular season before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin next week. Last year featured heartbreak on the final hole from one of the most recognizable players in golf as Justin Thomas was unable to crack the top 10 in the Wyndham Championship and earn enough points to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He finished 71st in the standings with the top 70 making the playoffs. Brendon Todd is currently 70th in the FedEx Cup standings and even in a weakened 2024 Wyndham Championship field, he's one of the biggest longshots to win.
Todd is listed at 90-1 in the latest 2024 Wyndham Championship odds as earning enough points to maintain his position in the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoff will likely be his main focus. Sungjae Im is the 16-1 favorite followed by Si Woo Kim, Billy Horschel and Shane Lowry at 25-1 odds to win the Wyndham Championship 2024, which tees off from Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. on Thursday at 6:50 a.m. ET. Before locking in your 2024 Wyndham Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters -- its third Masters in a row -- and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Wyndham Championship: Horschel (25-1), an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top 10. Horschel is coming off an impressive T-2 finish at the Open Championship, his best-ever showing in a major championship.
However, Horschel had been struggling mightily prior to that outing, finishing T-41 or worse in three consecutive starts, which included a missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open. Horschel's iron play has been wildly inconsistent all season and he enters the Wyndham Championship ranked 102nd in greens in regulation percentage (65.65%) and 120th in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.113), which doesn't bode well for his chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week. See who else to fade here .
Another surprise: Luke Clanton, a 40-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 20-year-old will be playing in just his sixth career PGA Tour event, but he's made the cut in four of five career events and finished T-2 at the John Deere Classic on July 7.
Clanton made his PGA Tour debut at the U.S. Open in June and made the cut before finishing T-41. After a rough opening round of 76, he shot back-to-back rounds of 69 before finishing at 8-over-par for the major. Clanton, competing as an amateur, doesn't have to worry about a playoff position, so he can play aggressively and go for a win-or-bust mindset and given he's finished in the top 10 in two of his first five tournaments, the model sees value in Clanton at 40-1 odds to win the 2024 Wyndham Championship against this field.
