The Colorado Buffaloes will open the 2024 college football season on August 29 when they host North Dakota State at Folsom Field in Boulder. NDSU is a powerhouse at the FCS level and will enter the season ranked No. 2 in the country in that subdivision. The 2024 Colorado football roster will have a drastically different look when the season kicks off after head coach Deion Sanders added 42 players through the Transfer Portal and another 13 from the high school and junior college ranks during the offseason. Over 40 players from the 2023 Colorado football roster transferred to other programs at the end of Coach Prime's first season in Boulder.

With such a high amount of roster turnover, it should come as no surprise that the Buffs have several key position battles going on during Colorado football fall camp that will help shape the 2024 Colorado football depth chart. Priority No. 1 for Coach Prime and his staff this offseason was getting better on the offensive line. Shedeur Sanders was the most-sacked quarterback in the FBS in 2023, and every starting offensive lineman from last season either transferred or graduated. While the Buffs added 12 new offensive lineman during the offseason (three from the high school and junior college ranks, and 9 transfers), that didn't stop Coach Prime from continuing to bolster the group.

Colorado once again turned to the Transfer Portal to land former LSU and Florida A&M offensive lineman Kardell Thomas. Thomas was a top-100 recruit in the 2019 recruiting class, but injuries kept his career from really taking off at LSU. "I'm a guy they need in the room," Thomas told BuffStampede. "I can come in with my experience and really shake the world up again. (Offensive line) coach (Phil Loadholt) talked to me and said he watched my FAMU and LSU film and felt they could develop me for the NFL. There are many, many years of NFL coaching on this staff. They run it like an NFL team. These months of being on this team will make it easy for me when I'm ready to take that NFL route. They can tell you everything before you get there." Another priority for the Buffs this offseason was improving the team's rushing attack. Colorado started the season out with a bang, but their running game was virtually non-existent down the stretch in 2023. The Buffs averaged just 68.9 rushing yards and 2.3 yards per carry in 2023 -- both numbers ranked dead last in the FBS. Running backs Dylan Edwards, Anthony Hankerson, Sy'veon Wilkerson, and Alton McCaskill all transferred, leaving former walk-on Charlie Offerdahl as the only returning player involved in the team's running back competition.

One player who has impressed during fall camp is Ohio State transfer Dallan Hayden. "I can block, can catch and run in-between or outside the tackles," Hayden told BuffStampede. "So I feel like I am an every down back. I'm very eager. A big point for me this year is just to show people I am still the back that was playing my freshman year at Ohio State."
