The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have lofty expectations heading into the 2024 college football schedule. The Fighting Irish open the season ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25. Head coach Marcus Freeman will have to replace plenty of production on the offensive side of the ball after losing quarterback Sam Hartman, who threw for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. In total, Notre Dame is projected to have eight new starters on offense in 2024. Freeman landed transfer quarterback Riley Leonard from Duke in the offseason, shaking up the Notre Dame football depth chart.

In 2022, Leonard threw for 2,794 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also added 11 rushing touchdowns for the Blue Devils that season. Who emerges as his backup on the Notre Dame football roster will be a key development to monitor at Notre Dame football practice. Top Notre Dame Fighting Irish practice storylines

Notre Dame was dealt a serious blow on the offensive live earlier this month. Sophomore offensive lineman Charles Jagusah was expected to be the starter at left tackle in 2024, filling the spot left by two-time All-American and first-round NFL Draft pick Joe Alt. However, Jagusah will miss the entire 2024 season after suffering a torn right pectoralis muscle earlier this month.

The former blue-chip prospect spent much of last season on the scout team, but was thrust into the starting role for the Sun Bowl with Alt opting out in favor of preparing for the draft. The 6-foot-7, 330-pound offensive lineman was on the field for 61 snaps in the victory over Oregon State, helping Notre Dame's ground game rack up 236 yards and two touchdowns. Linebacker Jack Kiser is a seasoned veteran on Notre Dame's defense. Last season, Kiser finished with 62 total tackles, including 41 solo, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. He's a jack of all trades for the Fighting Irish, made evident by his versatility shown in 2023. Among his 354 snaps in 2023, Kiser lined up 39 times at defensive end, 30 times over the slot receiver, 12 times at cornerback (goal line) and another 39 times at outside linebacker.

Kiser will enter his final season in South Bend with high expectations and the undisputed leader of Notre Dame's linebacker group. Kiser is expected to play the weakside linebacker, a position often referred to as the "Will", in the Fighting Irish's base defense. He's expected to play alongside Drayk Bowen, a sophomore who recorded just eight tackles for Notre Dame last season. Kiser's experience and leadership acumen will be needed for the Fighting Irish to make a deep run in 2024. Find out more about Mike Denbrock's new offense at Irish Illustrated .
