Wisconsin is adding former NFL coach Jack Del Rio to its staff in an advisory role, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reports . The 61-year-old Del Rio brings decades of coaching experience to Madison, where he'll work under Luke Fickell as he enters his second year with the program.

Del Rio most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, a position he held from 2020-23. Prior to that, he was head coach of the then-Oakland Raiders from 2015-17.

He compiled a 25-23 record in his three years with the Raiders and guided them to the NFL playoffs in 2016. He also led the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-11, where he amassed a 68-71 record with two playoff appearances.

Del Rio, a former linebacker at USC and in the NFL, has spent his entire coaching career at the professional level since joining the New Orleans Saints as an assistant strength coach in 1997. In addition to stints as a linebacker coach with the Saints and Baltimore Ravens, Del Rio was also the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2002) and the Denver Broncos (2012-14).

Wisconsin went 7-6 in its first full year under Fickell, who joined the Badgers after six years at Cincinnati. Wisconsin opens its 2024 season Friday night against Western Michigan.
