Week 1 of the 2024 NFL regular season wraps up on Monday Night Football between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. Both teams have aspirations of being Super Bowl contenders and have played each other 14 times in history, with the 49ers leading the all-time series 11-3, including a 4-2 record at home. In 2020, the Jets were defeated by San Francisco, 31-13, at MetLife Stadium in their last meeting. 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is inactive with a calf injury.
Kickoff from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif, is set for 8:15 p.m. ET. San Francisco is a 3.5-point favorite in the latest Jets vs. 49ers odds via SportsLine consensus, while the over/under for total points scored is 43. The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up well over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season on an incredible 181-129 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. It is also on a 35-21 roll on top-rated NFL picks since Week 7 of 2022.
The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick'em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.
The 49ers trot out a disruptive defense again in 2024. They have high IQ and relentless players on all three levels. Last season, San Francisco was eighth in the NFL in total defense (303.9), third in rushing defense (89.7), and tied for seventh in total sacks (48). Linebacker Fred Warner is one of the best at his position. He has a nose for the ball to pile up stops.
Last season, he recorded 132 total tackles, six TFLs, 11 pass breakups, and four interceptions. Defensive end Nick Bosa gives the 49ers a dynamic enforcer off the edge. Bosa has an array of moves to generate pressure in the backfield. In his career, the Ohio State product has compiled 209 total tackles, 53.5 sacks, and 10 forced fumbles. He has three seasons with 10-plus sacks as well. See who to back at SportsLine .
Why the Jets can cover
The New York Jets added Tyron Smith, Morgan Moses, and John Simpson to the offensive line this offseason to help protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers and running back Breece Hall. The Iowa State product is an explosive playmaker with the ball in his hands. He can easily accelerate away from defenders, but owns reliable hands as a pass-catcher. In 2023, Hall finished with 994 rushing yards, 591 receiving yards, and nine total touchdowns.
Tight end Tyler Conklin is an additional difference-maker on the offensive end. Conklin does a strong job attacking the seams and will be a security blanket for Rodgers. The Central Michigan product put up 61 catches with a career-high 621 receiving yards and 10.2 yards per reception last year. He finished with 50-plus yards in six outings last season.
