Police are investigating a shooting incident that left a semi truck driver dead in Grant County, Indiana.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) said on Monday morning that a suspected road rage incident involving a passenger vehicle and a semi truck was reported on I-69. The passenger vehicle exited the interstate, and the semi truck driver is believed to have followed.

“What we know right now is that one of our local residents exited on the State Road 26 Exit, and was followed by a semi. The issue was between their two vehicles. Our local resident was on his way home, I believe, from a fishing trip, from what I understand, was with his family. And the semi followed him off the exit, followed him to his home,” Grant County Sheriff Del Garcia said.

“There was a verbal altercation that occurred, and, from what we understand right now, our local resident had a laser-type [device] pointed at him, which he believed to be a weapon, so he fired upon the semi, striking the driver. The driver’s semi went across a couple of cornfields, ended up catching on fire,” said GCSO.

Police confirmed that the truck driver was killed.

The incident is under investigation, and this is a developing story.
