Four people were killed on Thursday morning in a series of crashes involving a total of 13 vehicles on the Ohio Turnpike.

The Ohio Turnpike closed in both directions on Thursday morning for a series of fatality crashes involving passenger and commercial vehicles.

The first crash occurred at 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike at mile marker 48 in Swanton Township. This crash involved four commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle. One person died and three others were injured.

A few minutes later, a second crash occurred about a mile away, at mile marker 49 in Fulton Township. This crash involved two trucks — one hauling sulfuric acid — and a passenger vehicle. Two people died in this crash and several others were hurt.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., a third crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the Turnpike at mile marker 50.8, about a mile from the second crash. This crash involved two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles. One person died and several other people were hurt.

Police shut down the Ohio Turnpike in both directions between State Route 108 and State Route 2. Westbound lanes have since reopened, but eastbound lanes are still closed.

    See alternate routes below.

    This is a developing story.
