A plan to reduce flooding on Interstate 10 in Houston will also help to reduce the number of bridge strikes, officials say.

The Houston Avenue bridge over I-10 is 14 feet 3 inches tall and has been hit by commercial vehicles 46 times already in 2024. Instead of raising the bridge, TxDOT plans on building a portion of I-10 over the bridge, which will help with both flooding and bridge strikes, reported ABC 13 .

The construction is a part of the White Oak Bayou Project, which is intended to prevent flooding across Houston, including on the currently flood-prone stretch of I-10 between Heights Boulevard and Interstate 45. This portion of the project is scheduled to begin at the end of 2024 and is expected to last at least 12 months.

Similar phases of the project will also be conducted on Yale and Studemont Streets, which are expected to remain under construction until at least early 2028.
