Truckers asked to weigh in on ‘cargo theft crisis’

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is asking for input from the trucking industry on the growing problem of cargo theft.

On August 19, the ATRI put out a call for motor carriers and brokers to participate in a survey to help researchers better understand cargo theft types, frequency, geography, and commodities targeted, as well as to identify successful counter-strategies used by both motor carriers and freight brokers.

The ATRI has opted to study cargo theft more closely after industry stakeholders reported an uptick. The FBI estimates that cargo theft costs $15 to $30 billion per year.

The group says that the survey is an important data-gathering initiative because “many industry stakeholders are hesitant to publicly provide cargo theft data.”

“Cargo theft is a pervasive issue that won’t go away without a collaborative effort,” said Ben Banks, Vice President of TCW. “With accurate cargo theft data, our industry will be able to quantify the issue, and work more effectively with law enforcement and commercial insurance to combat this costly problem.”
