A truck driver had to be rescued from on top of his submerged truck cab after accidentally veering off of a narrow road in Vermont on Tuesday.

The accident happened on August 20th in Swanton, Vermont on Route 78 near Louie’s Landing.

“The initial report from the driver was that he was coming from around the corner, and another vehicle was crowding him in his lane. He unfortunately caught the shoulder and was unable to recover,” said Swanton fire department Chief Daniel Chevalier to NBC 5 .

The truck landed in a nearby river and the driver “got out and got on top of the cab,” said Chevalier. “He was not able to get back onto the shore due to his medical condition.”

Crews brought the driver back to shore and closed the road to work on removing the trailer from the river. The trailer was loaded with chocolate at the time of the accident.

“This stretch of road is very common for 18-wheelers. It’s very narrow. There’s no forgiveness with the shoulder,” said Chevalier.

The road has since fully reopened, but crews will continue cleanup of the wreck into Wednesday afternoon.
