A Ford truck hauling gravel recently crashed through the bottom of a covered bridge due to “excessive weight,” according to local police.

The incident occurred on August 23 near Gorham, Maine.

According to the Gorham Police Department (GPD) , 37 year old Maine resident Joshua Polewarzyk was operating a Ford F-750 hauling a load of crushed gravel on Babb’s Bridge connecting Gorham to the Town of Windham.

The bridge has a posted 3 ton weight limit, and the Ford weighed 36,000 pounds, according to the Portland Press Herald .

Police say that the “excessive weight of the vehicle” caused the wooden floor of the covered bridge structure to give way.

The pickup truck fell through the bottom of the bridge to the river below.

Polewarzyk was able to self-extricate and only sustained minor injuries.

Polewarzyk was cited for “bridge violation, causing damage to the bridge due to excessive weight” by Maine State Police.

The incident is under investigation by GPD and the Maine State Police Commercial Division.

Repairs to the bridge are expected to take several months.
