A truck driver is okay after veering off of a highway and into some deep water late on Tuesday evening.

The accident happened at about 11:10 p.m. on September 3rd in the Turnagain Arm near Portage, Alaska.

According to Anchorage Daily News , the tractor trailer was traveling along the Seward Highway near mile marker 82 when the “driver lost control and veered off road into the Inlet” where a piece of guardrail had been removed for construction.

The semi truck ended up almost completely submerged and the trucker sustained non life threatening injuries . There was reportedly horizontal rain and poor visibility at the time of the wreck.

“He did an amazing job keeping the wheels up — keeping the wheels on the ground,” said Girdwood Fire and Rescue Chief Michelle Weston. “It could have gone a totally different way.”

No citations were issued as a result of the incident. A tow truck was working to remove the truck and trailer from the water as of Wednesday afternoon. No further information has been released.
