Police had to escort a tractor trailer backwards off of the George Washington Bridge after it crashed through a toll plaza on Monday morning.

The accident happened on September 30th starting on the Fort Lee, New Jersey side of the bridge.

According to ABC 7 News , the tractor trailer crashed into the toll plaza when it entered the bridge, knocking some of its load of construction materials off of the flatbed trailer. The truck then continued onto the top level of the bridge.

Police eventually stopped the tractor trailer and escorted it off the bridge by putting it in reverse and redirecting it onto local streets. Crews also worked to load the spilled debris onto another tractor trailer and clear the roadway.

The bridge has since been reopened, but delays as long as 90 minutes were present during the morning commute. No further information has been released.
