Interstate 55 southbound was partially shut down on Wednesday morning after an off-duty police officer collided with a semi truck.

The accident happened on Wednesday, October 9th in West Memphis, Arkansas at around 8 a.m.

According to ABC24 , an off-duty police officer was in his personal car when he collided with a tractor trailer just past the Interstate 55, Interstate 40 split.

The exact reason for the crash is unknown, but the officer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-critical injuries. Information on injuries sustained by the truck driver has not been released.

The wreck forced the closure of all but one southbound lane of I-55 heading into Memphis. Drivers were advised to continue avoiding the area as of 9:25 a.m.

“The incident is currently under investigation by the Arkansas State Police, and we will continue to cooperate fully,” West Memphis Police said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the officer and their family, and we are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.”
