Linkey sworn in as Perryville mayor

PERRYVILLE — A week after winning the town election, Commissioner Michelle Linkey has become not only the Town of Perryville’s new mayor, but also the first female mayor in the history of Perryville.

Linkey thanked the full house in Perryville Town Hall for their support and took her seat.

“Madam mayor, the gavel is yours,” said Commissioner Bob Taylor as the meeting officially began under her leadership.

George Patchell, town administrator, started to introduce the first matter before the board, hesitating somewhat.

“Madam mayor... I have to get used to saying that,” Patchell said.

Linkey defeated the incumbent mayor, Matt Roath 398 to 260 in a race that brought out almost 20% of the town’s 3,333 registered voters. Three years ago Roath defeated then-incumbent Mayor Bob Ashby by nine votes in a race that attracted a 12% turnout.

Until 1996, Perryville — like Charlestown — had a five-member board of town commissioners and those members voted among themselves to nominate who would serve as president. Steven Pearson became Perryville’s first mayor, serving eight years.

Linkey presented Julie Jeric as her candidate to take the open seat on the board of town commissioners. She urged the commissioners to look at Jeric’s qualifications but also welcomed other names for consideration.

“She has my support,” said Commissioner Christina Aldridge.

Commissioner Tim Snelling also gave a show of support.

“I know she’s done a great job on the Planning Commission,” Snelling said. Jeric is the current chair.

A special meeting will be held Tuesday at 6:30 to approve a new commissioner and swear that person into office.
