STERLING, Va. — Heavy wind and rain is expected Friday when Tropical Storm Debby arrives in the mid-Atlantic region, which includes Cecil County.

Thursday night rain is expected to continue into Friday night with thunder, wind up to 34 miles per hour and likely flooding in low-lying areas.

“Technically Debby is a decaying storm,” said Jeremy Geiger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sterling, Va. He said the worst of the storm will have impact along the Blue Ridge Mountains and areas west of I-81 in Maryland. However Cecil County won’t be spared.

“We’ll get a couple of bands of heavy rain,” Geiger said Thursday, adding be aware of the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

The storm is having an impact already on some local events and venues. Perryville officials have announced that Perryville Community Park will remain closed all day Friday. Located along the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay, the park often gets damaged during heavy storms. The park will re-open once damage has been assessed and cleared, according to town officials.

Elkton Alliance has cancelled its 26th Anniversary Celebration, which was scheduled for Friday night in downtown Elkton.

North East Chamber of Commerce is postponing most of its outdoor music but is encouraging businesses and restaurants to continue with the planned 2nd Friday Olympics-themed events.

The Stickney Memorial Shootout & Car Show at Cecil County Dragway will be rescheduled. Owners of the venue on Theodore Road in Rising Sun cited the storm and public safety concerns as the reason for the postponement of the Saturday event.
