NEWARK, DEL. — A man is facing an assault charge after allegedly beating another man unconscious in a Newark parking lot, police said.

The incident happened just after 3:15 p.m. Monday in a parking lot in the 1300 block of Marrows Road, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.

The incident began when the victim was involved in a minor car crash in the parking lot. After the crash, George Anderson, 51, of Perry Point, Md., began to argue with the 68-year-old victim, Rubin said.

Anderson knew the victim but was not involved in the crash.

“During this argument, Anderson struck the victim in the face and then left the area,” Rubin said. “Anderson returned a short time later and struck the victim at least two more times in the face, resulting in the victim falling to the ground unconscious.”

Police arrived and arrested Anderson. Officers who searched Anderson found cocaine in his possession.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Anderson was charged with first-degree assault and possession of cocaine. He was jailed after failing to post $41,000 secured bail.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. William Anderson at 302-366-7100, ext. 3469, or wanderson@newark.de.us.
