EARLVILLE — If you’ve ever been hiking and wondered how to tell what animals are around, Mount Harmon Plantation’s “Who Dung It” walk, set for this Saturday, Aug. 31, aims to do just that. The plantation welcomes guests to their 200 acre historical nature preserve for a guided nature walk focused on how to track down animals inhabiting the grounds.

“The animals that live in Mount Harmon leave clues all over the place for us every day,” said event coordinator Pamela Hamlen.

The event is designed to teach guests how to find which animal has been on the trail before them by identifying their scat and tracks. At the beginning of the event, there will be an educational presentation to teach guests about what these animals’ diets look like and how to identify them based on what they leave behind.

“Mount Harmon has all kinds of animals,” said Hamlen.

Guests can expect to see foxes, white tailed deer, raccoons, birds of prey, reptiles, turkeys, and maybe even otters.

After exploring the nature preserve and discovering a variety of animals, there will be an animal track themed bingo at the Educational Discovery Building with corresponding prizes for winners.

“Whenever anybody starts talking about scat it’s usually something pretty funny and educational,” said Hamlen.

The walk runs from 10-11:30 a.m. and is free to members. For non-members, there is a $10/ticket charge.
