ELKTON — The Maryland State Highway Administration plans to put a brand new traffic light into service starting Monday at US Route 40 where it intersects with Nottingham and Old Elk Neck Roads.

“Starting on Monday the lights will be flashing,” said Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman.

This is a construction project that started in March of 2023. “It was largely completed two weeks ago.”

Gischlar said there remains a short punch list of work to be completed but the traffic signals are ready to go to work.

The intersection will go to what Gischlar calls “full color” on Oct. 3. He added the lights will be timed with the intersection at 40 and Routes 279 and 7 to keep traffic flowing.

“This has been in the plans for years,” he said, adding, “It will help with traffic coming off the side streets.”
