Happening this week in and around Cecil County:

Robert Scott started Scott’s Landscaping & Construction so he could spend more time with his family.

Formerly a career firefighter for the US Government, he said that schedule made it hard to be a dad.

“I was working two days on and two days off,” Scott said of the 48 hour shifts. He decided to retire early and go back to landscaping and construction; something he had done since his youth.

Scott’s Landscaping & Construction is based at 621 Bridge St. in Elkton. With more than 20 employees they handle residential and commercial projects.

“We specialize in shopping centers, HOAs (home owners associations) and warehouses,” Scott said. “We also have a construction division for residential construction such as decks and patios. We do renovations and demolitions.”

As a testament to the growth of Scott’s Landscaping, he now has a two acre site and a fully renovated headquarters that he describes as his hub.

Scott said now he has the opportunity to be active in his community and with his children, but he finds time to visit every project that has hired Scott’s Landscaping & Construction.

“I am always at a job site,” Scott said. “But I have a lot more time for my family.”

Contact Scott at 443-987-5489 or go to scottslandscaping-md.com to learn more or to get a free estimate.

Mushroom House Automotive celebrated 30 years in business Tuesday with proclamations, recognition, a check presentation and lunch

Butch Webb started the business at 823 Harrisville Road in Colora after the family mushroom business was sold. Steven Webb said that, after coming home from three tours in Vietnam, his dad has had to re-brand himself three times, going from mushroom farmer to hazardous waste clean up to garage owner, then in 2005 having to rebuild after a fire destroyed the business.

“My dad is my hero,” Steven Webb said.

While he graciously received all the congratulations, Butch Webb was most interested in handing a check for $4,000 to the Sons of the American Legion Squadron from Mason Dixon Post 194 in Rising Sun.

Steven Webb explained that Mushroom House Automotive takes donated vehicles and makes them road ready on behalf of a charity.

“We charge the charity for parts and labor at a lower rate,” Webb said, adding that rather than going through a typical auto auction, the charity instead makes 20- to 40% more selling the vehicle itself. “It’s all because of my dad’s vision.”

They’ve been doing the charity vehicles for about five years, raising more than $350,000.

Megan McRae, executive director of Cecil County Chamber of Commerce, was happy to be part of the celebration. She also noted how Mushroom House Automotive hires young people, assuring the next generation has a solid foundation.

“Every business has a story and it’s amazing to see how this business will pass down that legacy and not just to their family,” she said. “It’s exciting to see what the next 30 years will bring.”

Mushroom House Automotive is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday by appointment.
