In 2023, the Sunshine State recorded 16 unprovoked shark bites. The figure represents 44% of the U.S. total and 23% of unprovoked bites worldwide. With its extensive 1,350-mile coastline and warm waters, Florida offers an ideal environment for both sharks and humans. Consequently, the state’s popularity as a beach destination and its vast marine ecosystem contribute to more shark encounters than other regions.
