Labas, special teams spark Central Michigan to 66-10 romp over Central Connecticut
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Joey Labas threw for three touchdowns and 342 yards and completed 75% of his passes and Central Michigan beat Central Connecticut 66-10 in the season opener for both teams. Labas finished 18-for-24 passing overall and did most of his damage before halftime, completing 16 of 20 for 268 yards and two touchdowns and sending the Chippewas to a 42-7 halftime advantage. Myles Bailey opened the scoring by running in from 7 yards out for a 7-0 Central Michigan lead. Elijah Howard knotted it with a 3-yard run, but on the following kickoff, Stephan Bracey ran 87 yards to score and Central Michigan pulled away. Blue Devils quarterback Brady Olson finished 12-for-20 passing for 90 yards.

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan Chippewas are gearing up to kick off their season on Thursday at home at Kelly/Shorts Stadium against Central Connecticut State. The Chippewas are coming off of a disappointing 5-7 season in 2023 and are looking to improve that this year. CMU hasn’t won or been at home on the first week of the season since 2020. Preparation for week one is always a little bit different, with the lack of film on you opponent. “Well, you look at what their coordinators have done and obviously they’ve done a really good job of rebuilding their roster. So, you know, there’ll be a lot of players who we haven’t seen on film. But you know we’re looking forward to open it up at home. That’s only really only happened one other time since we’ve been here and there’s something special about that first game being at home,” said head Coach Jim McElwain. The game kicks off at 7 PM.
Women's Cross finishes fifth with the men finishing sixth at the Jeff Drenth Memorial
SHEPHERD, Mich. – Men's and Women's Cross Country competed in the 39th annual Jeff Drenth Memorial hosted by Central Michigan for a 5,000m race. The women's side finished in fifth as the men finished in sixth as they continue to gear up for more races this fall. The Golden Eagle will compete in a few weeks as they will race in the Warrior Challenge hosted by Wayne State on Friday, September 13.
JV Volleyball Defeats The Lakeview Wildcats
The JV volleyball team started their league play last night at Lakeview. The first set was won by the Eagles 25-13 behind some strong serving and a 6 point and 2 ace service run by Gracie Goguen. The second set was more of the same, Katie Duran started off the game with 10 service points and 2 aces to give the ladies an 11-1 lead right away and they never looked back winning the second set 25-7. The third set was more of a back and forth battle but the ladies pulled out a 15-13 win for the three set sweep of the Wildcats. The JV Lady Eagles are now 10-1 and are off until after Labor Day when they will play at the Nest on Wednesday night in a Tri Match.
Field Hockey Opens 2024 Season with 4-1 Victory over Saint Louis
Central Michigan Field Hockey kicked off the 2024 season successfully, defeating Saint Louis 4-1. Sophomore Cameron Pluciennik scored the first goal in the 11th minute, followed by junior Mallory Camryn's two goals that sealed the win in the third and fourth quarters. Senior Kaitlyn Bowker also contributed with a goal in the third period. Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone praised the team's depth and effort in maintaining a high pace throughout the match.

Illinois State volleyball drops season opener to Central Michigan
Illinois State volleyball suffered a defeat in their season opener to Central Michigan three sets to one on Saturday night in the Linda Herman tournament. The Redbirds steadily improved from set to set. ISU lost the first set by ten points and then the second set by five. They would then go on to win the third set, just to lose the fourth set 25-21.The consistent improvement from one set to the next is a standard expectation for head coach Allie Matters from game to game.
