Michigan teen girl missing for months found having got engaged to 44-year-old man

A teen girl who had been missing for about two months after she disappeared from her home in Michigan was found living an entirely different life.

Officials said she had been found living with an older man to whom she was also engaged. Penelope "Penny" Wise, 17, had ran away from her Cedar Springs home on May 31 at around 6 p.m., according to family members who reported her missing to the Kent County Sheriff's Office .

Her last moments before vanishing were captured on security footage, which showed her walking alone near a bar in Rockford around midnight. The sheriff's office said Monday that Penny met her fiancé, 44, the same night on June 1. It was understood that Penny left her family's home willingly but there was absolutely no trace of her in the near two months officials had been searching.

The 17-year-old had somehow avoided being seen by bystanders or appearing on any security cameras in the area, which prompted a sprawling search by investigators, including the FBI, US Marshals Service, Michigan State Police and the Rockland Department of Safety.

“We believe she intentionally walked away from home, but due to the length of time and no sightings KCSO [Kent County Sheriff’s Office] and her family are concerned for her well-being,” the sheriff’s office said in a June 7 update.

The additional help from other law enforcement agencies and volunteers, the multiple parties conducting on-the-ground searches and an open tipline for information leading to Penny's whereabouts had turned up nothing. Law enforcement officials received their first tip Sunday morning when an "observant" community member reported they had seen a teen girl who looked like Penny riding a bike.

She was recognizable from the missing teen posters. Investigators responded and discovered Penny had moved into the home of a 44-year-old man the night she'd run away. The two apparently met June first around 2 a.m. For the next two months, she had lived with the unnamed resident until last Sunday when she was seen leaving the home on a bike.

They had also learned the two were engaged-the exact date is unclear at this time but likely happened between the teen's disappearance and the resident's call to police last weekend. Despite the uncertain circumstances, Penny was reported to be safe as the sheriff's office continues its investigation.

"We're happy that she's been found," Penelope's mother, Mishael Wise, told FOX Monday. "Sad that we can't see her yet... the kids themselves have a lot of mixed emotions right now." There are no charges authorized against Penny's fiancé at this time, according to the Kent County Prosecutor's Office.
