NELSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Kent County deputies say a man has been arrested for trying to break and enter after a neighbor caught him in the act.

It happened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday in Nelson Township, near the intersection of 20 Mile Road and Myers Lake Avenue, according to a release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say a 68-year-old Cedar Springs man looked outside and saw a man wearing a hoodie, a mask and gloves heading toward his neighbor’s driveway. The Cedar Springs man followed, heard loud sounds and saw broken glass by the service door of his neighbor’s garage, the release says.

When the Cedar Springs man confronted him, the suspect fled to the woods, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies say they searched the area “for an extended period of time,” alongside the Michigan State Police and a K-9 unit from MSP, but they didn’t find the suspect.

About an hour later, detectives who had stayed on scene saw the suspect emerge from the woods, the release says. He was arrested for attempting to break and enter, according to the sheriff’s office.

“KCSO values our observant community members for calling us when they observe suspicious activity,” deputies wrote.
