New Record And Scholarship Offer For Union Cross Country 5K Winner
Years of dedication and hard work are paying off for a pair of Union High distance runners. The Union Cross Country team competed at the UIAAA Invitation in Spanish Fork this weekend where around 30 schools from 1A to 6A classification were competing. Jaylie Jenkins and her teammate River White beat out all their competition in the 5K race with River placing second with a time of 18 minutes 8 seconds and Jaylie earning 1st place with a time of 17 minutes 28 seconds, a new school record! “These two girls deserve all the praise,” shares Union track coach Levi Wise. “They have put in countless hours running, in the weight room, in the swimming pool, doing everything their coaches have asked them to do. Their hard work and sacrifices are paying off. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish this year and beyond high school.” Wise says the fact that Jaylie broke 17 minutes 30 seconds is a huge deal and puts her among the nation’s elite. It’s no surprise then that her performance resulted in a phone call with a scholarship offer from BYU that has one of the best running programs in the country. Jaylie has verbally committed to the offer. Well done to seniors Jaylie Jenkins and River White on their dominating performances this weekend against the best runners in the state.
